Particular attention is paid to the practical procedure of embalming, and the imaginary technique of \"materializing a corpse, or resurrecting the dead,\" as described in Twain's novel. By focusing on Pete's doubly exploitative death, I aim to shed new light on this work by considering how the \"materialization of the dead\" connects to this war-wounded cripple and to death in postbellum America.
