Food and other commodities were brought to this area via the Bianhe canal, the main route of transportation of products from Jiangnan, in the southeast of China. Therefore, this area saw a high concentration of official warehouses for food and private stores. In the western area, there stood many barracks for soldiers of the imperial army and their families. There was a unique army rule that soldiers had to carry home their food stuff by themselves from the warehouses on the opposite side of the city.
