Not a few of them attribute the decline to unsatisfactory school performance. From all sides we hear calls for educational reform. What is the actual situation? Is there such a significant difference between the educational systems of the U.S. and Japan, her main economic rival? Can such differences actually lead to economic failure? Many comparative studies have been done, most of them focussing on urban areas. But in order to extract a complete picture of American education from concrete examples, it is necessary to consider education in rural areas as well as in large cities.
