| 内容記述 | Many scholars say, like A. v. Premerstein, that Augustus deprived principes of all clientelae and became the sole patronus. One of the bases of their argument is the, emperor's interference in the elections of magistrates. In this article, we investigate how far was his interference and what was important for the success in the election, especially during the Julio-Claudian period. Firstly, when we consider the lex Varelia Cornelia in A. D. 5 and the transfer of elections to the Senate in A. D. 14, we can find Augustus' many commendationes for the consulate. And the former broke down the connections between the senators and the plebs, the latter between the senators-and the equestrians. Secondly, we consider the elections by the Senate since A. D. 14. Consequently, like the reign of Augustus the praetor was elected without emperor's interference, and the consulate was appointed by him. But, the suffragium of the influential men was very important, especially for the new men. And the relation between suffragator and the candidate recommended by him is alike to that between patronus and cliens. We must acknowledge the maintenance of clientela in the Senate under the early Empire, at least in the elections. | |||||
