| 内容記述 | There have been many controversies on the definition of meaning in linguistics, but recent studies are showing a trend that meaning reveals its aspects rather in its function than in its definition as an entity. After examining the relevant theories by Bloomfield and Sapir, this study is to chiefly follow that of Professor Ullmann, Saussure's successor. The changes of meaning, abstraction process, and emotive value are counted as the most remarkable aspects of meaning and it is examined how much they actually work in some passages from the Bible, Shakespeare, Henry James, etc. As a conclusion, these three elements have some connection with the function of context, linguistic as well as of culture, and their knowledge is necessary for the accurate understanding of foreign languages. | |||||
