Reading is both thinking process and productive activity. It is more than just receiving meaning in a literal sense. It involves bringing a greater thinking ability or cognitive effort. In Japan, English instruction at high school and college level usually employs the 'intensive reading procedure'. The 'extensive reading procedure,' on the other hand, has attracted comparatively little research interest.
