| 内容記述 | In this paper I examine the commercial value behind the "business of death" in 19th-century America through literature through Mark Twain's The American Claimant. Particular attention is paid to the practical procedure of embalming, and the imaginary technique of "materializing a corpse, or resurrecting the dead," as described in Twain's novel. By focusing on Pete's doubly exploitative death, I aim to shed new light on this work by considering how the "materialization of the dead" connects to this war-wounded cripple and to death in postbellum America. I then present the possibility of projecting Twain's vision into an industrial perspective on 21st-century AI technology. | |||||||||
